Nightingales are declining across southern England as their dense scrub habitat disappears. Protecting this remarkable songster requires targeted habitat management.
Nightingale welfare is fundamentally a habitat quality issue. Without dense, multi-stemmed scrub, pairs cannot conceal nests from predators or find the invertebrate-rich leaf litter they need to feed chicks. The rapid loss of coppiced woodland - once managed on regular rotations that maintained young scrub - is the primary driver of welfare decline. Reintroducing coppice management is the most direct welfare intervention, creating the exact habitat structure nightingales evolved to use.
