Grey Seal Welfare: Pupping Beaches and Human Disturbance

Grey seals breed on UK beaches in large numbers. Their welfare during the autumn pupping season requires careful management of human access and disturbance.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Grey seal welfare during the pupping season depends critically on low disturbance at beach colonies. Mothers disturbed by approaching humans or dogs may flee to the sea, abandoning pups. Pups that fall into cold water before they have moulted to their adult coat are at high risk of hypothermia. The concentration of pups on beaches creates welfare risks from crushing, fighting between males, and disease transmission. Well-managed viewing from a safe distance, as at Donna Nook and the Farne Islands, provides public access while maintaining welfare standards.
