UK bottlenose dolphins live in resident communities with complex social structures. Their welfare is threatened by boat disturbance, pollution, and bycatch.
Bottlenose dolphin welfare in the Moray Firth is compromised by cumulative boat disturbance. Individual dolphins subject to frequent vessel approaches show altered diving behaviour, reduced feeding efficiency, and elevated stress hormone indicators. Pollution accumulation impairs breeding - females with high PCB loads have lower calf survival rates. Bycatch causes immediate welfare harm in the most severe way. The welfare of this resident community is measurable through long-term health monitoring of known individuals, which the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute conducts in the Moray Firth.
