Positive Animal Welfare: Beyond Absence of Suffering to Flourishing

Modern animal welfare science is moving beyond preventing suffering toward enabling animals to flourish. Understanding positive welfare helps design better environments and interventions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Positive animal welfare represents a paradigm shift from the 'absence of suffering' framework of the Five Freedoms to a 'presence of flourishing' model. An animal that is merely not suffering may still be far from thriving. Farm pigs given complex enrichment, good social conditions, and positive human contact show behavioural and physiological indicators of genuinely positive emotional states - curiosity, playfulness, affiliative behaviour. This shift matters because it raises the welfare bar: it is not enough to prevent pain and distress; we should aim for animals that are genuinely thriving. This is both more ethically ambitious and practically achievable.
