Pangasius, known as basa or tra fish, is one of the most widely exported farmed fish globally, with welfare and environmental concerns in intensive Vietnamese production systems.
Pangasius welfare in intensive Vietnamese aquaculture is compromised by extremely high stocking densities that cause chronic stress, fin damage, and elevated disease susceptibility. Water quality management is critical in these systems - oxygen depletion events cause acute welfare crises. Antibiotic overuse treats symptoms of poor welfare without addressing underlying conditions. Slaughter welfare is rarely a focus in Vietnamese catfish production. Consumer demand for responsibly produced pangasius and the expansion of ASC certification have created market incentives for improvement, but welfare standards in uncertified production remain a concern.
