Zoo Animal Welfare

Zoo Bear Welfare and Enclosure Design

Bear welfare in zoos has improved dramatically through better enclosure design that provides space, complexity, and opportunities for natural behaviour, but significant variation in standards persists.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Zoo bear welfare has undergone a genuine transformation as welfare science has developed and public expectations have risen. Bears in small concrete enclosures with no naturalistic substrate or enrichment show high rates of stereotypic pacing and self-mutilation - clear indicators of severe psychological distress. Modern high-welfare bear facilities provide multiple hectares in some cases, with varied terrain, water for swimming, digging opportunities, foraging enrichment, and seasonal preparation for hibernation where appropriate. The welfare contrast between progressive modern facilities and traditional zoo bear pits is enormous. Accreditation bodies increasingly use welfare outcomes as key assessment criteria.
