Precision livestock farming technologies including sensors, cameras, and AI systems are enabling continuous welfare monitoring at scale, offering the potential to transform farm animal welfare assessment.
Precision livestock farming welfare technology represents one of the most promising welfare advances in decades. Current farm welfare monitoring relies on stockperson observation, which is limited in frequency, consistency, and scale. Continuous sensor-based monitoring can detect individual welfare problems including lameness, illness, and abnormal behaviour far earlier than visual inspection, enabling earlier intervention that reduces suffering duration. Beyond detecting negative states, AI analysis of behaviour can identify positive welfare indicators including play frequency and social interaction patterns that traditional monitoring cannot capture at scale. Implementation challenges include sensor reliability, data interpretation skills, and cost, but the welfare potential is substantial.
