Bullfinches have declined significantly in intensified agricultural areas but show signs of recovery where traditional orchards and scrub habitats are maintained for their winter food needs.
Bullfinches face welfare stress from loss of the varied, scrubby habitats they depend on. In intensified farmland, removal of hedges and scrub eliminates key food sources and nest sites. Traditional orchard declines have removed critical winter feeding habitat. Cold winters with depleted food lead to physiological stress and mortality. Bullfinches are shy birds that are easily disturbed, making nest success vulnerable in managed landscapes. Where traditional orchard restoration occurs, bullfinch welfare visibly improves as food security increases.
