Organic farming standards generally deliver better animal welfare outcomes than conventional systems, but significant variation exists between organic certifiers and individual farm practices.
Organic certification provides meaningful welfare improvements over conventional and basic free-range systems in most livestock categories. Lower stocking densities reduce stress and disease pressure. Mandatory outdoor access allows natural behaviour expression. Slower-growing poultry breeds suffer far less from the cardiac and skeletal problems plaguing fast-growing breeds. However, organic does not mean perfect welfare: some organic systems have inadequate enrichment, and certification audits may not detect all welfare failures. Combining organic certification with higher-tier welfare schemes provides the strongest welfare assurance available to consumers.
