Cattle Feedlot Welfare Globally

Beef feedlots confine cattle in high-density feeding pens for rapid weight gain, creating welfare challenges from restricted movement, high-concentrate diets causing digestive disorders, and extreme weather exposure.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Feedlot cattle experience multiple overlapping welfare harms. High-concentrate diets necessary for rapid weight gain cause subacute ruminal acidosis, a painful condition causing reduced appetite, laminitis (hoof inflammation), and liver damage, affecting a significant proportion of animals. Standing on compacted, manure-covered surfaces causes foot disease. In hot climates, shade and cooling is inadequate in many facilities. Social disruption from mixing unfamiliar cattle in high-density pens causes fighting and injury. The global scale of feedlot beef production means the total welfare impact is enormous. Consumer demand shifts toward grass-fed and higher-welfare beef reduce, but do not eliminate, these welfare harms.
