Male calves born to dairy cows have historically been killed at birth in the UK, but rising demand for rose veal and industry reform are changing their welfare prospects.
The welfare of male dairy calves has improved significantly through policy and consumer pressure, but serious challenges remain. Calf transport at very young ages causes stress, dehydration and injury. Separation from mothers within hours of birth causes measurable distress in both cow and calf. Rose veal systems allow natural behaviour and social contact, representing a significant improvement over lethal disposal. Supporting rose veal as a more humane alternative helps redirect consumer demand toward better welfare.
