Laying hens at the end of their production cycle face serious welfare challenges during depopulation, transport and slaughter, as their commercial value is extremely low.
Spent hen welfare is a neglected area of the egg industry. Because the birds have minimal commercial value, there is less financial incentive to invest in careful handling or high-quality slaughter. Bone fractures during catching are extremely common - studies have found over 20% of birds arrive at slaughter with pre-existing fractures. Transport in cold or hot conditions causes additional stress. Improving depopulation methods and slaughter quality for spent hens is one of the most cost-effective welfare improvements available.
