Cheetah Captivity and Welfare Challenges

Cheetahs are uniquely adapted for speed and freedom of movement, making captivity particularly challenging for their welfare. They are also threatened by the illegal pet trade.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cheetah welfare in captivity is severely compromised by their extreme adaptation to open habitats and high-speed pursuit. Restricted space causes chronic stress, stereotypic pacing, and immune suppression. Cheetahs in zoo settings have much lower reproductive rates than wild populations, reflecting physiological stress. The illegal pet trade causes intense suffering - cubs are separated from mothers young, transported in poor conditions, and kept in wholly unsuitable environments. Supporting wild cheetah conservation and opposing the pet trade are the most important welfare actions.
