Canada geese are intelligent, social birds that have expanded significantly in the UK and North America, creating conflict situations managed with varying degrees of humaneness.
Canada geese are sentient birds capable of forming long-term bonds and showing distress during social disruption. Roundup culls during the annual moult period, when birds cannot fly, cause extreme acute stress and result in separation of family groups, with goslings sometimes killed or separated from parents. Egg oiling and addling are less acutely distressing but end developing lives. Border collie hazing is the most humane management tool, effectively deterring birds from conflict areas without injury or death.
