Sea Turtle Welfare and Beach Nesting Threats

Sea turtles face welfare threats across their entire life cycle from plastic ingestion and fishing bycatch at sea, to light pollution and development disrupting beach nesting.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sea turtle welfare involves multiple overlapping harms across a long lifespan. Plastic ingestion causes slow starvation as the gut becomes blocked with indigestible material. Bycatch victims experience drowning or severe hook injuries. Disoriented hatchlings that walk inland die of dehydration and exhaustion. Females with fibropapillomatosis carry large tumours that impair movement and feeding. The temperature-induced sex imbalance may ultimately threaten population viability. Beach lighting reform, bycatch reduction, and plastic reduction are the most direct welfare interventions.
