Eurasian lynx reintroduction to Scotland is under active consideration. Both the welfare of reintroduced animals and their effects on prey species and deer management require careful assessment.
Lynx reintroduction welfare involves both the individual animals released and their ecological effects. Captive-bred lynx released into unfamiliar territory experience significant stress during establishment. Welfare monitoring is essential during the post-release period. Once established, lynx would regulate their own welfare through natural behaviour. Their effect on deer welfare involves increased predation mortality - which, while individually harmful to prey, may improve population-level deer welfare by preventing overgrazing and its associated starvation. Sheep predation risk can be managed through guardian animals and exclusion fencing.
