Pig Enrichment and Rooting Behaviour

Rooting is a fundamental pig behaviour driven by strong instinctive motivation. Denying pigs rooting opportunities causes frustration and redirected behaviours that create welfare problems in intensive systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Rooting deprivation in pigs is one of the clearest examples of a system causing welfare harm by preventing expression of a high-priority behaviour. Pigs in barren environments redirect their rooting motivation to pen fixtures and pen mates - biting bars, chewing concrete, and tail-biting. This is not mischief but frustrated motivation seeking an outlet. Providing rooting substrate - even minimal quantities of straw - reduces redirected behaviour significantly. The cost of straw provision is low relative to its welfare benefit. Welfare assurance schemes that require rooting material represent a straightforward and impactful standard.
