Welfare of Zoo Sun Bears

Sun bears are the smallest bear species and among the most active and intelligent, making captivity particularly challenging for their welfare if enclosures lack complexity and naturalistic opportunities.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sun bear welfare in captivity depends almost entirely on enclosure quality. These are arboreal, active animals that in the wild spend hours foraging for insects, honey, and fruit across large territories. Flat concrete enclosures with minimal climbing opportunity cause the same chronic frustration seen in other confined carnivores. Bile farming sun bears represent an extreme welfare case - animals subjected to repeated surgical procedures, kept in tiny crush cages, and often showing permanent physical damage. Sanctuary rehabilitation with complex forest enclosures demonstrates that recovery from severe trauma is possible with appropriate conditions.
