Insect Hotel Welfare and Provision Standards

Insect hotels have become popular garden features, but poorly designed versions provide little genuine welfare benefit. Understanding what makes an effective insect hotel helps focus effort.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Insect hotel welfare value depends entirely on design and placement. A correctly built insect hotel - with clean bamboo tubes of 3-8mm diameter, at least 15cm depth, in a sunny south-facing position - provides genuine welfare benefit to solitary bees by increasing nesting site availability. A poorly built one with large open cavities, decorative filler, or north-facing placement provides no welfare benefit while creating a false sense of contribution. Replacing tubes annually removes disease and parasite loads. Placing hotels near diverse flowering plants ensures occupying females can find pollen resources for their developing larvae.
