Welfare of Animals in Sanctuaries

Animal sanctuaries vary enormously in quality. Understanding what distinguishes genuine sanctuaries from exploitative venues claiming the label helps direct support and tourism effectively.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sanctuary welfare varies as much as any other captive animal sector. Venues using the sanctuary label while breeding animals for sale, allowing photo opportunities with young animals, or displaying animals in insufficient space exploit public trust. Genuine sanctuaries refuse breeding, reject contact experiences with wild animals, and make decisions based on animal welfare rather than visitor revenue. Accreditation by GFAS or recognised national bodies provides meaningful quality assurance. Directing tourism and donations toward genuine sanctuaries and away from venues that exploit the label provides the most impactful support for the animals housed.
