Aquatic turtles including red-eared sliders are popular but frequently surrendered pets whose welfare requires specific water quality, temperature, diet, and UV-B that most setups fail to provide.
Aquatic turtle welfare failures are widespread and often severe. Metabolic bone disease from UV-B deficiency causes painful skeletal deformity that develops over months without obvious signs to owners. Inadequate water filtration causes ammonia toxicity and bacterial infections. Inappropriate diet causes nutritional deficiencies. Turtles surrendered by overwhelmed owners enter rescue centres that may also struggle to meet their needs. The 30-40 year commitment required for a turtle purchased on impulse means many individuals cycle through multiple inadequate homes before death or long-term rescue placement. Point-of-sale welfare information requirements would prevent the majority of these welfare failures.
