Rabbits are among the most widely misunderstood companion animals - their housing needs are frequently underestimated, causing chronic welfare compromise for millions of pets.
The welfare of pet rabbits is chronically underestimated by owners who purchase them believing they are low-maintenance pets suited to small hutches. In reality, rabbits have complex needs: social companionship (ideally a neutered pair), extensive space for running and binkying (joyful jumping), appropriate diet predominantly of hay, and mental stimulation. Confined rabbits frequently develop obesity, dental disease, spinal problems from lack of exercise, and psychological distress. The Rabbit Awareness Week campaign and RWAF guidance have significantly raised awareness, but millions of rabbits remain in inadequate conditions.
