Collared Dove Welfare in Urban Environments

The collared dove completed one of the most remarkable range expansions in ornithological history, colonising Britain from the 1950s, and now faces the welfare challenges of urban life.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Collared dove welfare in urban environments is shaped by both food availability and disease pressure. Trichomoniasis - a protozoan parasite spread through contaminated water and food - causes severe throat inflammation preventing swallowing, leading to starvation. The disease spreads at bird feeding stations where infected birds regurgitate food for others. Regular cleaning of bird feeders and water baths is therefore a significant individual welfare intervention. Cat predation of nesting collared doves causes welfare impacts at both individual (predation distress) and population level. Providing safe elevated nest sites and managing cat access reduces these impacts.
