The European polecat has staged a remarkable recovery across Wales and England after near-extinction from persecution, offering insights into predator welfare and coexistence.
Polecat welfare improvements have followed their legal protection and recovering population. However, road mortality causes significant welfare harm - polecats crossing roads at night are killed in large numbers relative to population size. Illegal persecution on game estates remains a documented threat. Polecats are increasingly caught as non-targets in snares set for foxes and rabbits, causing welfare harm and sometimes death. Their recovery illustrates that protection from deliberate persecution can allow rapid population recovery even for carnivores historically viewed as incompatible with human land use.
