Goat Dairy Welfare

Goat dairy farming is often perceived as more welfare-friendly than cattle dairying, but goats face distinct welfare challenges including kid separation, disbudding, and housing conditions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dairy goat welfare shares many challenges with dairy cattle but receives less attention. Kid separation causes distress in both mother and offspring - goats form strong maternal bonds and vocalise extensively when separated. Male kid welfare is particularly concerning: male dairy goats have limited commercial value and may be killed at birth or transported for meat production. Disbudding requires appropriate pain management that is not universally applied. Goats are more susceptible to social stress than cattle - they establish clear dominance hierarchies and subordinate animals in group housing may be prevented from accessing food and lying spaces.
