Budgerigars are among the world's most popular companion birds, yet their welfare is often compromised by inadequate space, diet, and the absence of conspecific companions.
Budgerigar welfare suffers from the perception that small birds have simple needs. In reality, budgerigars require conspecific companionship, extensive flight space, dietary variety, and cognitive stimulation. The cages typically sold for budgerigars are inadequate for flight - birds must be able to fly several metres to maintain physical condition. Solitary budgerigars may appear content but show physiological signs of social deprivation. Seed-only diets create chronic nutritional deficiency leading to fatty liver disease and shortened lifespan. Providing a bonded pair with a large cage, pelleted diet supplemented with fresh foods, and foraging enrichment substantially improves welfare.
