Aquaculture Oxygen Management Welfare

Dissolved oxygen management is fundamental to farmed fish welfare - inadequate oxygen causes acute suffering and chronic health compromise in densely stocked aquaculture systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dissolved oxygen management is one of the most direct welfare variables in aquaculture. Fish experiencing hypoxia (low oxygen) show rapid behavioural responses - gasping at the surface, reduced activity, loss of balance - indicating acute distress before physiological damage occurs. Chronic subclinical hypoxia, where levels are low but not acutely lethal, causes reduced feed intake, impaired immune function, and growth depression - all welfare compromises. Oxygen management failures resulting in mass mortality events cause suffering across entire farm populations simultaneously. Robust monitoring systems and redundant aeration equipment are welfare necessities, not optional equipment.
