Road traffic is one of the leading causes of hedgehog death in Britain, and simple infrastructure and behaviour changes can significantly reduce this preventable welfare harm.
Road mortality causes acute traumatic injury in hedgehogs that is frequently not immediately fatal - injured hedgehogs are found surviving in distress on roadsides. The freeze response that made hedgehogs safe from most natural predators is lethal when applied to traffic. The cumulative mortality of tens to hundreds of thousands of hedgehogs annually contributes directly to population decline. Infrastructure interventions - culverts beneath roads, hedgehog-specific tunnels, and road signage - reduce mortality where implemented. At individual level, driving carefully in residential areas at night and slowing when headlights illuminate a hedgehog prevents many individual welfare harms.
