Positive Welfare in Farm Animals

Moving beyond the absence of suffering to actively promoting positive experiences in farm animals represents the frontier of applied animal welfare science.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Positive welfare science challenges the historical default of defining good welfare as the absence of suffering. This is an important distinction: a farm animal can experience no acute pain or fear while simultaneously lacking any positive experiences that make life worth living. The positive welfare agenda asks: what do these animals enjoy? What do they seek out? What produces positive affect? For pigs, play and social exploration produce positive vocalisations; for cows, anticipation of food causes operant conditioning suggesting reward systems; for hens, dust bathing is associated with endorphin release. Designing farm systems that enable these positive experiences, not just preventing negative ones, represents a genuine welfare advancement.
