Humpback whales face serious welfare harm from entanglement in commercial fishing lines and nets, causing injury, chronic stress, and death across ocean habitats worldwide.
Entanglement causes prolonged suffering, including open wounds, restricted movement, malnutrition, and chronic stress. Animals may survive entanglement for years before succumbing. The process of disentanglement itself is stressful and dangerous for both whales and responders. Population-level reproductive impacts are significant since entanglement disproportionately affects adult females.
