Seabirds are among the most severely affected vertebrates by ocean plastic pollution, with ingestion causing internal injury, malnutrition, and death across dozens of species globally.
Plastic ingestion causes a slow, painful decline: birds feel satiated while starving, experience internal abrasion and chemical toxicity, and die over weeks or months. Chicks are especially vulnerable as they cannot regurgitate solid plastic as adults can. The welfare harm is diffuse, invisible, and affects entire breeding colonies.
