Precision livestock farming uses sensors, AI, and data analytics to monitor individual animals continuously, offering potential to improve welfare outcomes at scale.
Precision livestock farming has genuine potential to improve animal welfare by catching health problems earlier, reducing the need for routine interventions, and providing data to support management decisions. However, technology is not a substitute for good husbandry. If PLF reduces direct observation and human-animal contact, it could mask welfare problems rather than solving them. The quality of what is measured matters as much as the act of measuring.
