Modern zoos face fundamental welfare challenges in providing adequate environments for animals evolved for large territories and complex social structures.
Zoo animals cannot consent to confinement and must live within boundaries set entirely by human decisions. Even well-designed enclosures cannot replicate the spatial extent, environmental complexity, and social dynamics of wild habitats for wide-ranging species. Animals with high cognitive complexity and large natural home ranges - elephants, great apes, large felids - are particularly at risk of welfare harm in captivity regardless of enclosure quality.
