Cultivated meat - grown from animal cells without slaughter - has potential to dramatically reduce farm animal suffering, but faces technical, regulatory, and scaling challenges.
If cultivated meat reaches cost parity with conventional meat, it could eliminate the need to raise and slaughter billions of land animals annually. This represents potentially the largest single reduction in animal suffering in human history. The welfare case is compelling, though transition challenges including industry displacement, regulatory approval, and consumer acceptance must be navigated. The current welfare cost is a small number of cell donor biopsies rather than billions of slaughtered animals.
