Aquaponics combines fish farming and hydroponic plant production, offering potential welfare benefits but also unique challenges for fish welfare management.
Aquaponics fish welfare depends critically on system design and management. Fish in well-managed low-density systems with good water quality can have welfare outcomes superior to conventional pond aquaculture. However, high-density systems with marginal water quality can cause chronic stress through ammonia exposure, oxygen depletion, and social competition. The environmental benefits of aquaponics do not automatically translate into welfare benefits without deliberate welfare-focused management.
