Microchipping dramatically improves the welfare outcomes for lost companion animals by enabling reunification and reducing euthanasia in shelter settings.
Lost animals experience fear, disorientation, and physical risk from traffic, weather, and other animals. The longer an animal remains lost, the greater the welfare harm from exposure and starvation. Microchipping dramatically reduces the time to reunification when animals are found and scanned. Animals in shelters without identification face euthanasia after holding periods expire. The welfare benefit of microchipping is therefore both immediate - reducing individual suffering when lost - and systemic, reducing shelter euthanasia.
