Wildlife photography can have significant welfare impacts when photographers disturb nesting animals, habituate wildlife to human presence, or support unethical operations.
The welfare harm from irresponsible wildlife photography can range from momentary disturbance to breeding failure and death. Owls repeatedly flushed from roosts in cold weather lose critical heat and energy reserves. Nesting birds disturbed by photographers may abandon eggs. Habituation of wild animals to human presence creates long-term risks as animals lose appropriate fear responses. The image is never worth more than the welfare of the animal photographed.
