Dental disease affects the majority of cats over three years old and is a leading cause of chronic pain that often goes unrecognized by owners.
Cat dental disease is one of the most common and most under-recognized sources of chronic pain in companion animals. Because cats evolved to suppress pain signals as prey animals, owners do not observe obvious suffering. Cats with severe dental disease eat, purr, and interact apparently normally while experiencing persistent oral pain. The welfare impact of undetected dental disease accumulates over years, during which owners are unaware that their cat's quality of life is compromised. Proactive dental care is therefore a welfare intervention, not an optional luxury.
