While great ape welfare receives significant attention, the welfare of smaller primates including marmosets, macaques, and lemurs in captivity deserves equivalent scrutiny.
Smaller primates receive less public attention than great apes but face equivalent welfare challenges from captivity. Marmosets used in research require complex social environments that many facilities provide inadequately. Pet lorises with clipped teeth experience chronic pain and immune compromise. Zoo lemurs in barren enclosures develop stereotypies and reduced reproductive success. All primates share the fundamental attribute of high cognitive complexity that makes deprived captive environments welfare-damaging.
