Precision agriculture technologies including sensors, AI, and robotics are transforming farm animal management, with both welfare benefits and risks depending on implementation.
Precision agriculture represents a genuinely double-edged welfare development. Technologies that detect lameness earlier, allow cows to self-select milking times, and provide individualized nutrition can dramatically improve welfare outcomes. However, if these technologies are used to increase stocking density, reduce staffing, or optimize only for production metrics, welfare can decline despite technological sophistication. The key question is whether welfare indicators are included in the optimization targets driving automated management decisions.
