Advances in automated facial recognition for pain assessment in sheep and other farm animals offer transformative welfare monitoring potential.
Pain is one of the most welfare-relevant experiences any animal can have, and its detection in farm animals has historically been inadequate because of behavioral suppression instincts and the difficulty of continuous human observation. Automated facial action unit systems offer the possibility of continuous, objective pain monitoring at scale. If deployed commercially with treatment protocols attached to welfare alerts, this technology could prevent millions of cases of untreated pain across livestock farming systems.
