Despite CITES protections, millions of wild-caught parrots and other birds are traded illegally each year, with extreme mortality during capture and transport.
Wild birds seized or killed during the illegal trade experience extreme suffering during capture (often using nets, glue, or snares), confinement in small containers for transport, and delivery into alien environments without appropriate food or water. Most die before reaching a buyer. Those that survive are often psychologically damaged from the experience, developing stereotypies and fearfulness that never fully resolve. Every wild-caught parrot in the pet trade represents a welfare catastrophe behind its apparently healthy appearance in a shop.
