Horse Weaving and Stable Vices Prevention

Stereotypic behaviors in horses - known as stable vices - are signs of chronic stress and frustration caused by management practices that limit natural behavior.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Stereotypic behaviors indicate that horses have experienced or are experiencing environments that frustrate fundamental behavioral needs. Prevention is far more effective than cure. Foals raised with social contact, outdoor access, and ad libitum forage rarely develop stereotypies. Management changes - more turnout, hay access, social housing, and environmental enrichment - can reduce the frequency and severity of established stereotypies even if they cannot be fully eliminated. Suppression devices that prevent the behavior without environmental improvement are welfare compromises.
