Dog Breeding Health and Conformation Reform

Selective breeding for extreme physical traits in dogs has created a crisis of inherited disease and structural suffering, with brachycephalic breeds particularly affected.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The widespread breeding of dogs with conformations that cause lifelong suffering represents a systemic welfare failure. Dogs with BOAS struggle to breathe, exercise, sleep, and thermoregulate - conditions that would be clearly unacceptable if caused by disease yet are deliberately perpetuated by breeding selection. Spinal problems in dachshunds, hip dysplasia in German shepherds, and eye conditions in many breeds represent similar examples. Reform requires both regulatory pressure and consumer education to shift demand away from breeds whose defining features cause suffering.
