Inadequate UV-B provision is one of the most common husbandry failures in companion reptile keeping, causing metabolic bone disease and significant preventable suffering.
UV-B deficiency causes metabolic bone disease, characterized by painful bone deformities, pathological fractures, muscle weakness, and organ failure if untreated. Many reptile owners are unaware that standard fluorescent lighting provides no UV-B, or that UV-B bulbs degrade invisibly. Providing appropriate UV-B through high-quality, species-appropriate bulbs positioned at the correct distance, for the correct duration, is one of the most fundamental welfare requirements for diurnal reptiles. The UV Index (UVI) framework developed by herpetologists provides practical guidance for different species, replacing the outdated approach of simply recommending 'a UV-B bulb'.
