Aquaculture Cleaner Fish Welfare

Lumpfish and wrasse are used as cleaner fish in salmon farming to remove sea lice, but their welfare needs are often neglected in an industry focused primarily on salmon production.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cleaner fish welfare represents a significant and largely invisible welfare problem in salmon aquaculture. Lumpfish and wrasse are used instrumentally to reduce sea lice, but their welfare needs are secondary to their function. High mortality rates indicate that the farm environment is not meeting their physiological needs. Lumpfish need shelter structures, appropriate temperatures, and hiding areas - needs rarely provided in sea cages optimized for salmon. The scale of cleaner fish deployment - tens of millions annually in Norway alone - means the aggregate welfare impact is substantial. Research programs are beginning to address this gap, but regulatory standards for cleaner fish welfare remain underdeveloped.
