Horse Saddle Fit and Musculoskeletal Welfare

Poorly fitting saddles cause chronic back pain, behavioral problems, and musculoskeletal injury in horses, yet saddle fitting quality and frequency of checking are widely inadequate.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Saddle fit welfare is one of the most widespread and preventable sources of chronic pain in working horses. A saddle that fits correctly one year may fit poorly as the horse's muscles develop or lose condition. The consequences of poor fit - localized pressure causing acute pain under the rider's weight - are borne entirely by the horse, who cannot request adjustment. Behavioral signs of saddle discomfort including bucking, girthiness, reluctance to canter, and resistance to mounting are frequently interpreted as training problems and addressed with aversive methods rather than addressing the underlying pain. Regular qualified saddle fitting prevents chronic suffering and improves performance and partnership.
