Zoo Arctic and Antarctic Animal Welfare Challenges

Animals adapted to extreme polar environments face unique welfare challenges in zoo settings far from their natural climate, requiring specialized facilities and management.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Polar animal welfare in temperate zoo settings involves significant challenges even with sophisticated climate control. Thermal comfort requirements are expensive to maintain and difficult to provide completely. More fundamental are the behavioral welfare challenges - polar bears in the wild range hundreds of kilometers, dive for food, and live in complex social contexts that no zoo can replicate. Behavioral pathologies including repetitive pacing and swimming are so common in zoo polar bears that they have been used as case studies in stereotypic behavior research. Some progressive zoos have concluded that adequate polar bear welfare cannot be achieved in their facilities and have discontinued polar bear exhibits rather than perpetuate poor welfare.
