Veal production raises significant welfare concerns depending on the system used, with traditional white veal involving severe movement restriction and dietary limitation, while rose veal represents a substantially higher-welfare alternative.
Traditional white veal production caused extreme suffering through isolation, movement restriction, and chronic anaemia. Modern EU regulations have substantially improved welfare by requiring group housing and roughage access. Rose veal represents genuine welfare progress, providing calves with social contact, ability to move freely, and a more natural diet. Supporting rose veal from welfare-certified farms helps address the difficult ethical issue of male dairy calves who would otherwise be killed at birth.
