Pig Weaning Welfare: The Critical Early Life Transition

Early weaning in commercial pig production disrupts mother-piglet bonds and challenges piglet immune systems, creating welfare problems that persist through the production cycle unless carefully managed.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Commercial early weaning creates a welfare double-burden: abrupt disruption of a social bond that would naturally last months, combined with the physiological challenge of adapting to solid food before the gut microbiome is mature. Piglets in the post-weaning period are highly vulnerable to infectious disease, and the stress of weaning suppresses the immune response at exactly this vulnerable moment. Mixing litters creates a social challenge on top of the physiological challenge. Extended lactation systems that delay weaning to 6 weeks show substantially better piglet welfare outcomes and are used in some higher welfare production systems.
